DAWN'S SOCKNITTING

My Handknit Socks Tally

Completed as of 11/08: 113 pairs (plus 3 pairs of microsocks)

As you can see from my tally above, these are pictures of just some of my completed socks, the ones I actually took photos of.

Please have patience while the thumbnail graphics load.

11/08 Kilt Hose, my own design, third pair knit for my son, Eric.  Yarn is a wonderful very vintage sock yarn, Bear Brand Nylon-N-Wool, that I worked double stranded for a good weight for knitting kilt hose, with a gauge of 6 sts/1”.
Hose top pattern knit in Broad Spiral Ribbing. Single columns of Broad Spiral Ribbing worked down each side of leg, with seed stitch ribbing down rest of columns. Seed stitch ribbing continued down heel flap, and the 4 stitch spiral rib was split at the heel/instep divide and formed into 2 stitch mock cable down each side of foot.

10/08 Shapely Secrets Socks, my own design with back of ankle shaping and graduated ribbing.  Trekking XL, size 1 needles.
CestariRedKiltHose0708-4c.JPG (136773 bytes) CestariRedKiltHose0708a.JPG (217872 bytes) 5/08 Kilt Hose, my own design, second pair knit for my son Eric, this pair as a High School graduation gift. Knit with Cestari 3-ply DK weight wool, color Cranberry.  Cuff pattern is Hourglass Eyelet, and I ran repeats of it down each side of the leg, and a half repeat of the pattern down the instep sides of the foot to give a bit of visual interest all the way down to the toe.  This pair was finished after I ran out of yarn then found more thanks to Sutter’s Gold ‘n Fleece in St. Germain, Wisconsin! Actually, it was one of Liz’s customers, Kim, who generously donated one skein of her leftover yarn for me to finish knitting these, and Liz shipped it to me for free. What wonderful ladies, thanks so much to both of you!!!!
5/08 Cables with Wavy Lacy Ribbing columns, my own design.  Cables and wavy lacy ribbing continue down the heel uninterrupted for dressy clog socks.  Knit with Mountain Colors Bearfoot yarn, size 1 US double point needles.
5/08 Kilt Hose, my own design, knit for my son Eric's Prom kilt outfit.  Knit with Schaffhauser Sockenwolle wool/nylon blend fingering sock yarn, on size 1 (leg) and size 0 (foot) needles.  Top fold-over cuff knit in "Little Capitals" stitch, leg worked in 5 x 1 seeded ribbing.
10/07 Shapely Secrets Socks, my own design, knit with Emu Superwash DK weight wool yarn for a thick warm sock.
10/07 Socks knit for my grandniece Salaene's 1st birthday.  My own design, using wavy-lacy ribbing pattern on leg and foot instep.
2/07 Socks from my son Eric's 17th birthday.  He picked the yarns for his socks, a deep green for the main color, and aqua for the heels and toes.  Brown Sheep Nature Spun sportweight wool yarn, size 1 (US) needles, 8 sts=1" gauge, my own basic sock design pattern.
1/07 Another pair of Chevy Bowtie Socks, my own design.  Knit for my Chevy-nut husband's birthday.  Made with Brown Sheep Superwash worsted weight, size 3 needles, for a sturdy gauge of 6.5 sts = 1".  Chevy Bowties were duplicate stitched onto the back of the legs after I completed the knitting, using scraps of white sockyarn.  My husband chose these yarns to match the two green and white classic Chevy Impalas we own.
8/06 Basic wool socks, with graduated ribbing on cuff to leg, as pair bellow (this type of graduated rib is featured in my Shapely Secrets Socks pattern also).  Knit with Idena Juvel, Norwegian superwash worsted weight wool yarn, size 3 needles, for thick, soft, and warm socks.
10/06 Basic graduated ribbing socks, my design.  Ribbing goes from 1X1 ribbing, to 3X1, then Seed Stitched 3X1 ribbing.  Opal wool/nylon sockyarn, size 1 (US) needles, woman's medium.
6/05 Another pair of Bowtie Socks, a gift for my Chevy-nut husband for our anniversary.  Same as pair I knit in 6/02, but using Regia 6 ply sockyarn for the main yarn, and  Lanett Superwash for the contrasting green yarn.  Size 3 needles used on this slightly thicker sockyarn, and basic ribbing on leg, except for where the bowties are duplicate stitched on each side.
4/05 Regia Color socks, worked in a slipped stitch ribbing on leg, to break up the colors a bit.  Just having fun with the colorful yarn!  Size 1 US needles, knit for myself.
2/05 Socks for my husband, knit with worsted weight wool yarn, called Yarn for Sox, a rather rustic wool yarn, that softened up after washing, thankfully!  Simple basic socks in a waffle ribbed pattern on leg and foot top.
2/04 My son Eric's 14th birthday socks, knit with Jo Sharp Silkroad Aran yarn, picked out by him when we stopped at a yarn shop in Frankenmuth, MI, on our last vacation.  A rather thick yarn for socks, but very luxurious, and the silk content should give them strength (hopefully!).  I knit them at a tight gauge for aran weight socks, and used 2X2 ribbing, going into garter ribbing after the cuff and down the length of the gusset shaping.  The pattern was stopped at the and of the gusset to make them smoother to fit in shoes better. Short cuffs since Eric likes his socks short, and there wasn't much yardage in the skeins.
1/04 My Shapely Secrets Socks, pair #4, my original design.  This pair knit with Opal yarn, gifted to me by my best knitting friend, Barbara!  Thanks Barbara, nice color choice, I love them!

Pattern now available directly from my site!

7/03  Shapely Secrets Socks, pair #3, my design. Larger size, knit with Regia Ringel yarn, to fit my husband's small but wide feet.  Notice the shaping around the back ankle and from the cuff into the leg, but without disturbance to the striping pattern of the yarn.

Pattern now available directly from my site!

7/03 Shapely Secrets Socks, pair #2, my design. Knit with Froehlich's Special Blauband fingering/sock yarn.  Ladies' med/large.  This plain color pair shows the helpful shaping a bit better.

Pattern now available directly from my site!

7/03 Shapely Secrets Socks, pair #1, my design.  Knit with Regia Line Stripe fingering/sock yarn.

Pattern now available directly from my site! (Originally featured in Dawn Brocco's Heels and Toes Gazette, Fall 2003)

3/03 Microsock Earrings: smallest pair from picture below, now attached to earring wires. Simple to assemble by using the cast on tail to sew to the loop on the wire.
3/03 3 pairs of Microsocks!  Made with 4 ply sockyarn (same skein as two pairs of Kroy baby socks, below), and size 0000 US needles.  The two bottom pairs in the picture where my first attempts at Microsocks, but they were still a bit bigger than I wanted for earrings (they measure 1 1/8" long foot with gauge 12 sts = 1"), so next I separated the yarn into 2 ply strands, and knit each 2 ply strand into a sock.  These socks, on top of photo, measure 7/8" long, and are about 16 sts = 1".   (Idea originally seen from pattern by Carol Breitner, but I did these off the top of my head. And no, I won't post my pattern in my Free patterns, if you want to make some, please contact Carol for her pattern.) (Yarn ends were still attached while I decided what to do with them all....)
3/03 Kroy 4 Ply baby socks, size 2 US needles, 32 sts, wavy lacy ribbing done on leg and down foot, my own design.  Knit for my friend Beth's baby girl Kate, therefore these are Kate's Kroys!
2/03 Shapely Secrets Socks, prototype pair of my design.  Knit with Regia Jacquard 6 ply, my design with a modified heel flap/ankle shaping, plus more "organic" cuff ribbing.

Pattern now available directly from my site! (Originally featured in Dawn Brocco's Heels and Toes Gazette, Fall 2003) (Final pattern designed with fingering weight sock yarn.)

2/03 Kroy 4 ply baby socks, size 2 needles, 40 sts.  2X2 ribbing on leg/cuff, and waffle stitch on foot.  Knit as a sample sock for beginners socknitting class I helped teach at my knitting guild.
1/03 Regia Line Stripe socks, knit for myself, ladies medium/large, 56 sts on size 1.5 US needles, doing a basic sock pattern (in my head, since this is my 90th pair, after all), but experimenting with adding a "wedge" of ribbing just above the heel flap, to help tighten and avoid "baggy ankles".  Helped a bit, but next time I try this, I might begin the ribbing wedge higher up the back of the leg.  Fun yarn colors to work with, having just the bit of striping, going great with my daily jean wardrobe. Regia is one of my favorite sock yarns, very durable.
1/03 Chevy Bowtie stitch socks.  The stitch pattern around the leg are Chevy Bowties, done in purl sts against knit background.  I charted the design out to make my own stitch pattern since my husband Brad was begging for more Chevy socks, but I didn't feel like duplicate stitching the bowties later, like his other Chevy socks, (below).  Made with Silja sportweight sockyarn, size 3 US needles, 52 sts.
1/03 Close up of Chevy Bowtie stitch on socks, above.  The design doesn't show as much as I hoped it would, but my husband does like them.
12/02 Silja sport weight sockyarn, done with Waffle stitch.  Very basic socks, but soft and warm.  Christmas gift for my husband Brad.  56 sts, size 3 US needles.
10/02 Single Shell columns going down each side of leg (with half a shell split going down the sides of the foot), plus baby cables on the sides of the heel flaps. Regia Confetti yarn, given to me by Barbara (Thanks Barbara!), size 2 (US) needles, 56 sts, woman's medium for me.
10/02 Close up of leg and heel of above sock (shells going down leg; baby cable with garter stitch borders and heel stitch on heel flap)  Yes, I know the lace yarn overs are stretched out at the center joining point, I couldn't keep the pattern from stretching right there.  Oh well, I was just goofing around when I designed these, and they are just for my own feet.)
9/11/02 Donation Socks knit for CIC, for the Socknitters list 2002 challenge.  Large child size (teenager hopefully), knit with Berella Country Garden DK, 100% superwash wool, 48 sts, size 3US needle, with a broken staggered 3x1 rib with knit rows between, to give some texture and stretch.  (Modeled by Popcorn, my resident sofa sheep.) (I forgot to take pictures of the 4 pairs I knit and mailed for the past 2  years' CIC donations-Oops!)
8/02 Twin Shell Columns socks, knit for my best KnitBuddy Barbara's birthday gift.  Knit with Schaffhauser Sockenwolle wool/nylon blend fingering sock yarn, size 1 needles.  The Little Shell Lace columns split at the heel, with one going down the instep and foot sides, and the other going down the heel sides, with a honeycomb heel stitch between the columns.  My own design, I'm working on putting into publishable form soon.
6/02 Regia 6 ply, with green Germantown wool for the Chevy Bowties and toes.  1X1 rib on the cuff, then 3X1 rib on the leg and foot, with a plain stockinette stitch rectangle left on the side of the legs for the bowties to be duplicate stitched on later.  Made as a gift for my Chevy Nut husband for an anniversary gift, since he's been begging for another pair since I made him the last pair with the blue bowties in 7/2000.  These colors match his '62 Chevy nicely.  56 sts, size 3 US needles, men's short/wide size.
6/02 Regia 4 ply Color (2032), done in a Seaweed ribbing pattern on the leg, with a 4X2 rib carried into the foot.  Size 1 needles, 60 sts, women's medium size.
6/02 Close up of leg on above Seaweed sock.
5/02 Fortissima Colori 1000, (color 490), with baby cables on the back of the legs, and st st on the front and down the top of the foot.  The cables go down the heel flap, for showing while wearing clogs.  The foot bottom is continued in the rev st st, for the smooth side of the fabric to be against the sole of the foot, as an experiment.  Just trying out something different for a change.  Size 2 (US) needles, 56 sts, women's medium size.
5/02 Regia Crazy 6 ply/sport weight socks, with Patons Look at Me yellow for the heels (I wasn't sure I'd have enough Regia for the whole sock, but I would have if I used it in the heel also-but think they look nice with yellow heels anyway).  1X1 ribbing on cuff, then 3X1 seed stitch rib on leg.  Size 3 (US) needles, 52 sts for leg, then 48 sts for foot, for a women's medium/large sock, for me!  I think these socks should get my feet noticed this summer in my Birkies and clear sandals!
5/02 Fixation cotton/lycra socks.  Basic short 1X1 rib, then 3X1 rib sport anklet socks, for my mom's Mother's Day gift.  Women's large, 48 sts, size 3 (US) needles.
popcornlacewebsale.jpg (60514 bytes) 4/02 Popcorn and Lace Rib socks.  My own design, that was published in the Fall 2002 Accessories issue of Cast On Magazine (my first nationally published design!).  Also the 1st Place Blue Ribbon winner in the Handknit Socks division at the 2002 Wisconsin State Fair. (My second Wisconsin State Fair Socks Blue Ribbon in a row.)   Knit with Regia 4 Ply sockyarn, size 2 needles.

Pattern now available directly from my site!

02/02 Wool worsted weight socks, hand dyed by Jolen (Wee Woolies by Jolen), color Oceania, boy's large, size 4 dp needles.  3X1 rib with purl squares inserted on cuff.
01/02 Lorna's Laces Liberty sockweight yarn, man's medium/wide, done with the leftovers from the socks below, plus off-white colored Regia for the foot.  3 X 1 seed stitch rib on leg, with 72 stitches, size 1 needles, 8 sts = 1 inch.
12/01  Lorna's Laces Liberty sockweight yarn, boy's large.  3 X 1 broken rib on cuff.  56 stitches on size 1 needles, 8 sts = 1 inch.
11/01  Lorna's Laces Liberty sockweight yarn, boys medium, done with waffle stitch pattern on leg and instep.  Used leftover from skeins from my socks bellow.
11/01 Lorna's Laces Liberty sockweight, women's medium.  3 stitch broken rib going down each side of leg and foot.   56 stitches on size 1 needles, 8 sts = 1 inch.

6/01  My Blue Ribbon winning socks at the Wisconsin State Fair, August 2001. Made with Schaffhauser Sockenwolle wool/nylon blend fingering sock yarn.  Little Shell lace pattern.  Knit off the top of my head, to my usual woman's medium (shoe size 8-9 US) sock pattern.  56 sts on size 2 US needles.  (Fair display picture provided by Stasia:   http://home.earthlink.net/~jeffnstasia/fair.htm  Thanks Stasia!)
6/01  Close-Up of leg of the above Little Shell lace sock.  Ribbing done to match shell pattern by doing: K2, P2, K1, P2 around.  (Shell Lace pattern is a 7 stitch repeat.)
5/01  Patons Muskoka, light worsted weight, 100% wool, with a 3x1 ribbing on leg.  Men's short and wide sock, for my DH.  (Done with hospital knitting time.)  Yarn Update: Socks developed holes in a very short time.  Yarn is rather soft for good socknitting, even when knit at firmer gauge.
5/01  Regia 6, sport weight sock yarn.  Men's short and wide sock, for my DH, knit with a ribbing of my own design on the leg.  Toe is different color after I ran out of the main color, and Elann was sold out of it.  At least my DH doesn't mind the silly looking sock!  (Done with hospital knitting time.)
5/01  Close-Up of the above Regia 6 sock.
5/01  Lorna's Laces fingering sock yarn, in the Tahoe colorway. 56 sts on size 2 US needles.  Broken 3x1 ribbing on a medium woman's standard sock.  Wonderful yarn to knit with!  (Done with hospital knitting time.)
5/01  Close-Up of the above Lorna's Laces Tahoe sock.
4/01  Regia Jacquard Ringel, #5173, wool/nylon sock yarn, knit on size 1 1/2 US needles, with 56 sts.  Ladies medium size, for me (shoe size 8-9 US).  Knit in basic st. st. to show off the great patterning that this fun yarn does all by itself!
4/01  Close-Up of the above Regia Jacquard sock.
4/01  Silja wool/nylon blend, bright variegated socks, knit on size 3 US dp needles, with 48 sts for a women's medium sock.  First time I've knit with this yarn, and I liked the feel of it, even though it did split a bit easier than I liked.  But I suppose if I looked at my knitting more while I did it, that might not happen as much.  :-)
4/01  Close-up of Silja variegated sock above.
4/01  Regia Ringel Clown, wool/nylon fingering sock yarn.  Women's medium, size 2 US with 56 sts.  Fun to knit, and wear!

ericmuskoka1.JPG (35429 bytes) 3/01 Patons Muskoka, light worsted weight, 100% wool, with a broken 3x1 ribbing (alternated after 4 rows) to make a wavy rib on the leg.  For oldest son Eric, men's size 6 shoe.  Yarn Update: Socks developed holes in a very short time.  Yarn is rather soft for good socknitting, even when knit at firmer gauge.

bradbwtwd3.JPG (56288 bytes) 1/01  Novita Nalle wool/nylon sport weight sock yarn.  Heels and toes done with black fingering sock yarn.  Wide wavy rib done on leg and foot instep.  Men's medium/wide, for my husband Brad's birthday.
bradbwtwd4.JPG (61032 bytes) Close-up of leg on above Novita sock.
bradwaffle1.JPG (36875 bytes) 1/01  Another Novita Nalle wool/nylon sport weight yarn.  Toes made with sock weight black fingering yarn.  Leg and foot instep done with the famous  Waffle Stitch rib pattern.  Thus named "Whole Wheat Waffle Socks".  Also for my husband's birthday, men's medium/wide.
bradwaffle2.JPG (60455 bytes) Close-up of leg on above Novita sock.
slouchsock1.JPG (39067 bytes) 12/00  Patons Look At Me, acrylic/nylon blend sport weight.  Slouch sock pattern on leg and foot instep, from Socks X3, but used on my basic ladie's medium size sock pattern.  For neighbor girl Tori's Christmas gift.

minsocks1.jpg (28601 bytes) 11/00  2 of 5 Mini Socks knit for the Socknitters Holiday Mini Sock Swap.  Made with odds and ends of leftovers.  Each sock is about 2-3" tall.
minsocks2.jpg (47219 bytes) 11/00  Other 3 of 5 Mini Socks knit for the Socknitters Holiday Mini Sock Swap.  Made with odds and ends of leftovers.  Each sock is about 1-3" tall.
ringelbluenorweg.JPG (29220 bytes) 10/00  Regia Ringel Norweger fingering wool/nylon sock yarn.  Color # 5160.  Basic women's medium sock, size 1 (US) with 60 stitches, knit in all stockinette, with honeycomb (Eye of Partridge) heel.
ringeltannorweg.JPG (49987 bytes) 10/00  Regia Ringel Norweger also, as above, but in tan and cream.  Color #5161.  This one I knit on size 2 (US), with 56 sts.
8/00  Schaffhauser Sockenwolle wool/nylon blend fingering sock yarn.  Purl Lace stitch from Socks X3, but done on my regular ladies medium sock pattern (that's in my head).
pls1.JPG (26326 bytes) 8/00 Close-up of Purl Lace sock above, in progress.
chevsock1.JPG (20503 bytes) 7/00  Two strands of fingering yarn, one Patons Kroy 3-Ply, one Red Heart Nylon fingering.  Basic man's medium/wide sock, with a Chevy Bowtie duplicate stitched on each leg after knitting.  For my husband Brad, who is a Chevy man, and wants many more pairs like this, with different colored Bowties.  Maybe I'll get around to some more someday!
4/00  Toe Up sock knit with green Cleckheaton heather, 100% superwash wool DK yarn.  Based on the pattern by Judy Gibson, Your Putting Me On Socks, with a baby cable ribbing for the cuffs.  Knit toe up to use every bit of yarn in the skein, since the yardage is a bit low on this yarn, which really feels more like worsted than DK, to me.  But it softens up nicely in the wash, and has been hard wearing yarn, so far, without any additional reinforcing.
4/00  Close-Up of baby cable ribbing on Toe Up sock, above.
samplesock.JPG (41284 bytes) 4/00  Sample sock knit during the Lucy Neatby workshop in Monticello, WI.  Toe-Up with afterthought heel, knit just like a wedge toe, with baby cable ribbing for the leg to finish it off.
wavylacysock.JPG (48192 bytes) 3/00  Berella Country Garden, 100% wool, DK weight.  Wavy Lacy ribbing done on leg and instep as far as the end of the gusset.   Ladie's medium.  Instructions for ribbing found here:  Wavy Lacy Ribbing Yarn Update: Socks developed holes in a very short time.  Yarn is too soft for good socknitting.
wavelace.JPG (50194 bytes) Close-up of leg on above Country Garden sock.
stoutshort.JPG (17084 bytes) 1/00  Woolease Stout and Short socks.  2X2 ribbing knit on men's medium/wide pattern for my husband.  My pattern is posted here on my free patterns page.  Yarn Update: Socks developed holes in a very short time.  Yarn is too soft for good socknitting.
alpacasock2.JPG (34165 bytes) 10/99  Dublin wool/alpaca blend, worsted weight, so generously sent to me by my wonderful online friend Barbara.  THANKS Barbara!  Dad's Easy Cable Rib from Socks X3 for the leg and instep of the foot, done on my standard women's medium pattern.  Size 3 (US), on 46 stitches.
purlace1.JPG (49451 bytes) ?/99  Wildfoote wool/nylon fingering sock yarn.  Purl Lace stitch pattern from  Socks X3.
laceribbabysock.jpg (57872 bytes) 9/99  Omegacrys Omega fine fingering weight, acrylic/nylon.  Two variations of ribbed with lace baby socks, made for my friend's twin's baptism.  One pair has a diamond lace pattern between the ribbing columns, the other has a wavy lace pattern.  The ribbing columns were inserted between the lace columns to help the socks stay on kicking baby feet!  Size 0 (US), 40 sts.  I also made two more larger sets of these in 2000 for the twins, Ben and Jack,  when they got bigger.
symbolsocks.jpg (90938 bytes) 8/99 Miniature socks I knit for pins to wear as the symbol socks for the KnitList (blue socks), and the Socknitters List (purple/white and white socks).  These are now pinned on my knitting bag, in hopes that other listmembers will spot them when I KIP (Knit In Public).
torisox.jpg (112262 bytes) 5/99  Regia Color wool/nylon fingering sock yarn.  Wavy Lacy ribbing on leg, with standard women's medium pattern.  Knit for neighbor Tori's 10th birthday.
babysocks.jpg (76058 bytes) 4/99  Two-Color Newborn socks I designed with vintage wool sock yarn, for my friend's twins newborn gifts.  My pattern is posted here on my free patterns page!
kidsock2.jpg (44038 bytes) 3/99 Woolease blue sprinkles, "Joan's Socks for Little Ones" pattern by Joan Hamer, knit for my youngest son, Evan.  Knit for the Socknitter's Magical Mystery Sock Tour pictures.  Unfortunately, these didn't hold up well, the soles developed holes quickly, but my son outgrew them fast, so I guess it didn't matter.  I no longer use Woolease for socknitting because many pairs I knit with it wore out quickly.  It needs to be knit at a VERY tight gauge for any chance of long-term survival!

Yes, since I've been knitting since I was a child, I've completed many many other sock knitting projects before 1999 as well, but their pictures are still waiting to be scanned, or the socks never had pictures taken at all. Maybe I'll dig up some old photos of my earlier socks and get them posted, someday....
